Elon Musk recently bought the social network Twitter, which brought a wave of discontent. In fact, this is why the freer social network Mastodon is currently popular. Elon is already starting to project his crazy ideas into Twitter, and one of them is charging $8/month for account verification. But now he’s introducing heavy censorship and shutting down accounts he simply doesn’t like.
On Twitter, @ElonJet was a very popular account that monitored and published the location of Elon Musk’s plane. Other similar accounts tracking the planes of Russian oligarchs and other wealthy people have been banned. It is worth pointing out that all of this information on aircraft is publicly available to everyone and its publication does not violate EU or US law.
Techcruch.com also reported that the official Twitter account @joinmastodon has been banned. Yes, this is the account of the aforementioned freer social network Mastodon. The blocking of this account is really funny and only beneficial for Mastodon. Twitter users don’t like the censorship and are starting to cancel their accounts and switch again.
The pinnacle of censorship, however, is blocking well-known journalists. These are not conspirators, but legitimate journalists who, among other topics, write decently about Musk. That is the only reason why they are banned, and Twitter is beginning to resemble the harsh censorship measures in contemporary Russia or China.
List of banned journalists:
- Donie O’Sullivan – CNN
- Drew Harwell – The Washington Post
- Ryan Mac – The New York Times
- Aaron Rupar – freelance journalist
